CPU Power
- With the new 5500 series Quad Core Intel® Xeon® processors based on Intel® Nehalem architecture, not only has performance increased, but the power requirements, and therefore costs, are less.
- By enhancing the 45 nm technology and using the Dynamic Power Management architecture that goes with it, unused cores are set to almost zero-power mode.
- Moreover, very low latency is achieved by the changed level 2 Cache of 256 KB, and, in addition, a new level 3 cache of 8 MB is supplied for all cores, ensuring that the individual cores continue to network together.
- The power uptake per SpecInt has reduced and, by introducing the integral memory controller, memory bandwidth is extended to up to 32 Gb/s.
- In direct comparison with the previous quad-core processes, performance - for example in virtualisation or in the database server area - can be more than doubled, without incurring higher power consumption.
Fast drives and flexible form factors
- Reliable, stable and fast data transfer is assured by making use of SAS hard drives (S-ATA can also be installed as an option).
- As an optional alternative it is also possible to install the fast SSD hard drives.
These SSD hard drives have a lower power take-up, faster performance and are quiet and stable – even when used in conditions
of vibration.
SSDs are very fast and exhibit low latency; they are used particularly in IOPS-critical sectors, where a lot of files are accessed very frequently. - In addition, the new CALLEO 300 series server comes not only as a 3.5" but also with a 2.5" hard drive system.
New chipset
- With the 5500 chipset (codenamed Tylersburg) Intel® has turned its back on front side bus architecture.
With the introduction of the Quick Path Interconnect (QPI) and thus, direct storage connection to the processor, the bottleneck between the CPU and the Northbridge that was used previously has been resolved.
By implementing DDR3 memory modules it is possible to achieve outstanding memory bandwidths of up to 32 Gb/s.
This accelerates the exchange of data between the various system components and, therefore, the overall system.
In addition, DDR3 memories consume less power than the previous fully buffered modules. - With the aid of Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT) it is possible simultaneously to calculate 2 threads per core, turning a quad-core module into a virtual eight-core.
- With the Turbo Mode a CPU can calculate at a higher cycle rate than that defined by the stated TDP frequency. The Turbo Mode thus becomes active when a core is under severe load, while the others are under no or very little load, in that it provides the active core with a greater clock rate. However this only happens if the CPU is working below operating system specifications or limits.
- The 5500 chipset improves dataflow by increasing the interconnect bandwidth, optimising the system bandwidth, increasing memory capacity and improving network traffic by reducing the I/O latency.
