The opening ceremony on May 31, 2008 marked the completion of a signifi cant and extensive project for the Swiss National Park: after a planning and building phase stretching over 6 years, the new National Park Centre in Zernez was fi nally complete. Offering enough space for up to 250 visitors, the exhibition centre required terminals to serve as information points. Numerous PCs from different providers were tested but the Mini PC developed by transtec proved most convincing. The Mini PC, SENYO 610, is one of the smallest PCs on the market. Weighing just 1.3 kilograms and measuring just 17.2 centimetres in length and 4.2 centimetres in height, it is similar in size to a CD drive. At 20 dBA, noise emission is whisper quiet. Despite its compact exterior, the SENYO 600 doesn’t lag behind other standard desktop PCs in terms of performance. The Mini PC managed to meet all the requirements of the new National Park Centre where visitors want to stay and fi nd out information without being disturbed.

The project also involved the National Park Centre integrating two transtec PROVIGO storage systems for their internal IT needs which run in a Unix environment with transtec servers. To leverage maximum availability, the data is mirrored between both systems.
„We will defi nitely work together with transtec in the future and are already planning virtualising our servers. Being a solutions provider, transtec can provide the required virtualisation know-how. I’ve been impressed by transtec and appreciate the fast and reliable support which is vital with complex projects and installations. The fi rst pilot tests should start in Spring 2010,“

explains Christoph Mühlethaler, IT manager.

The ISG Sanitär-Handelsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG was founded as a syndicate of sanitary wholesalers in 1956 and has continued to grow since then. The HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) market association provides a synergy platform for all its partners to enable better purchasing conditions, wider selling markets and thus a stronger competitive position for every single member. Since 2006, the ISG also provides the central processing service with EDI clearing centre for other purchasing associations. The virtualisation solution from transtec replaces all the 35 previously used servers. Considerably less hardware not only means less administration and maintenance but also the total energy costs have been drastically reduced. What‘s more, virtualisation units can be utilised far more effi ciently as CPU performance is only provided where it is really needed.

A total of three transtec CCV-V55002U virtualisation servers are connected with one transtec virtualisation storage bundle CCSVRISCSI with redundant iSCSI. Another four physical server cores complete the IT infrastructure solution.
"Even during the planning stage, the excellent impression we gained of transtec during a road show was confi rmed. The transtec solution met all our requirements and we were fully satisfi ed. transtec made it clear that we should contact them if we had any questions about the offer. And they proved true to their word. We didn’t receive any calls inquiring how far we were with our decision. The company gave us time to come to a decision. A quality which seems to have gone astray with some of the competition from whom we received unnecessary and annoying follow-up calls."

In the past, the development, sales and support departments of Medis Medical, a provider of software for the quantification of medical images, used local servers for storage and backups. This method could not cope with growing storage demands and the need to reduce maintenance overhead.

Medis sought a manufacturer- and platform-independent storage system with better performance and management features.
The transtec storage system selected by Medis centres around a transtec 5000M NAS & iSCSI Storage Server with 6 TB of SATA storage, expandable to 12 TB (24 x 500GB) in a RAID 6 configuration with integrated iSCSI snapshots. "Decisive in picking the transtec system was its attractive price, as well as its good performance and high scalability. [...] We now have a central storage system that meets our storage needs, at present in the terabyte range. We especially value the ability of this solution to be expanded to meet growing storage needs – we expect that our data volume will double during the coming year."

Since 2001, blueCarat AG with headquarters in Cologne, has been providing IT solutions and is involved in consulting as well as software development. The company focuses on Web-oriented technologies and the customers are from the telecommunications, industrial, commercial and public sectors. The aim of the IT upgrade was to cover various aspects: Besides updating the technical infrastructure, a split into autonomous administration units was also an issue. Another key target was virtualisation which would enable resources to be shared depending on requirements. The new complete solution has been in operation at blueCarat since May 2007, at the heart of which is a RAID system from transtec. The transtec PROVIGO 610 shares the storage capacities between the virtual machines which run on two CALLEO 301 transtec servers.

In addition, four CALLEO 101 models from the same family are also in use: firstly, they are used in the VPN in the demilitarised zone and secondly, as a firewall and VPN terminals at the subsidiaries.
"Our decision to go with transtec was based on the previous good experience with the hardware. Other reasons included the attractive price-performance ratio and the fast response to our inquiries which can only be delivered by a small to mid-sized company like transtec. The fast logistics process from transtec was also impressive."

"The extensive consultation service impressed us from the very start. The smooth implementation also spoke in favour of transtec. The conversion was worth every cent - we are now more flexible and can respond faster to our customers."

BELNET

BELNET, the state network agency, was established in 1993. It supplies the Belgian government as well as all key national research facilities and universities with online services and Internet access. But the portfolio also includes technically more demanding services such as video conferences and VPN services (Virtual Private Network). BELNET enables research facilities to access international networks such as Internet2 and GÉANT. Apart from all of these services, BELNET has also been offering its customers capacity for FTP transfer (File Transfer Protocol) for quite some time although it has reached its limits at times in terms of bandwidth performance and hard drive capacity. BELNET aimed to increase customer satisfaction in the area of FTP in the form of an improved technical offering. The Belgian Internet service provider wished to better utilise the capacities of its bandwidth connections while simultaneously increasing the number of connections to the server clusters. By linking powerful servers to become clusters, the aim was to improve and utilise the technical resources in a more efficient manner. The idea to merge servers to clusters was a true innovation as there are only a few providers of FTP storage using this technology.
transtec recommended BELNET an iSCSI storage system with switches based on a GB Ethernet connection. Users of BELNET services now benefit from a 10 GB Ethernet connection. transtec CALLEO 301 servers are used for front-end applications. The cluster solution ensures the requisite high availability.
"After having consulted different players in the IT market during our tender, we opted for transtec as we are very satisfied with the prices and quality of their products. In our innovative FTP project, we have particularly benefited from the swift support provided by transtec whenever technical problems arose during tests and implementation."

The J. Eberspächer GmbH & Co., founded in 1865 and with the main office in Esslingen am Neckar, is an independent company and focuses on two areas of technology: Exhaust gas technology (converters, soot filters, exhaust silencers) as well as auxiliary and supplementary heating systems for cars, vans, heavy goods vehicles, buses, construction vehicles and boats.
The growing quantities of data arising from development applications and the heterogeneity of the IT environment caused IT managers an ever-increasing number of headaches. The administration of many IT single systems, including storage applications, was becoming increasingly unclear and more expensive.
At the start of 2007, the SANmelody virtualisation software, from DataCore, was installed on the available hardware at the headquarters in Esslingen. It comprises of two transtec SAN Storage Domain Servers (SDS) with synchronous mirroring, authentic automatic failover/failback, thin provisioning and alternate pathing for the application servers.
In February 2007, the Neunkirchen site received a separate SDS with new storage hardware in the form of redundant PROVIGO 610 FC/SATA RAID systems, including thin provisioning and asynchronous IP replication. Since then, Eberspächer has raised the utilisation capacities of both SAN installations by using other systems from the PROVIGO-610 series. Eberspächer is currently managing around 35 terabytes with the help of storage virtualisation, with an upward trend.
"Naturally we spoke to other suppliers of virtualisation solutions before we made the final decision. The reason we chose transtec is, among others, because both the competence of their employees and the attractive cost effectiveness impressed us."

"It wasn’t just the advice we received, it was also the unproblematic implementation that justified working together with transtec. Our IT administrators are more than satisfied with the new system and the users haven’t even noticed the change."

"We will continue to push ahead with the virtualisation process in our office due to these positive experiences."

The municipal IT department services forty or so servers and is also responsible for a 600-unit PC pool. The town’s municipal IT infrastructure is diversified – 180 different programs are in use and both hardware and users are spread over several locations. After carrying out a detailed analysis of its backup infrastructure at the end of 2004, the Biel IT department made a decision to upgrade. The upgrade project lasted from January to March of 2005, consumed 100 man-hours and resulted in an expenditure of 70,000 Swiss francs. transtec was selected as prime contractor. It was to supply the hardware, provide consultation and be responsible for maintenance. Hitachi SATA-based disk arrays and Atempo backup software were used in the implementation. "Initially we considered acquiring a pure disk-to-disk solution. However, we were not convinced that this technology was mature enough and we therefore decided to go with a tape solution."

"Now that the Overland library is in use I can take a holiday without worrying about what may happen in my absence and the same applies to the rest of the staff: we all know that if worse comes to worse backups can be restored without a hitch."
