| Since 1992, the Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (FZD) has been engaged in basic and application-oriented research. The main topics are advanced materials, cancer research and nuclear safety research. It currently employs approximately 750 people. The research centre‘s work would be inconceivable without a high-performance system: Resource-intensive calculations and simulations are carried out every day and data generated from experiments are analysed. For the last eight years, the FZD has been using a high-performance cluster for these tasks. In 2009, the research centre decided to double the computing power of the existing cluster by implementing another cluster. The new cluster is mainly used for sequential and parallel calculations. The demands on processor computing performance and RAM, hard drive capacity and network performance are equally high. |
The current specifcations of the newly purchased transtec Hypnos HPC Cluster:

The seismic/seismology workgroup at the Freie Universität Berlin researches into the Earth's interior with the help of artificial and natural seismic waves. For this purpose, it developed a 3D imaging and modelling process which it applies in geotechnological and geodynamic projects on different depth scales. Two examples from the field of geotechnology: with the help of this process, a prediction range of up to 100 metres is possible during the build of the new Gotthard Basis Tunnel. Reservoirs up to five kilometres underground can be imaged and characterised. This is important when extracting petroleum and natural gas or for underground CO2 storage. By applying the process to geodynamic problems, the scientists want to improve research into the origin of large earthquakes. The Californian San-Andreas fault can thus be researched at a depth of ten kilometres and the Ocean plate under the South American Andes up to 100 kilometres. |
For a long time, the institute had to rely on reserving the necessary computing time and storage capacity either on the University's large mainframe computers or on the Beowulf cluster built by the institute. In the Spring of 2008, transtec installed a cluster with 13 Dual-Quad-core computing nodes and five Terabyte storage capacity. The plan is to expand this to 36 nodes by the start of 2009. With a total of 288 GB RAM, all the workgroup's calculations and simulations should be executed. In addition, 22 Linux workstations are in operation at the institute. |
"Our institute needs a reliable system with excellent computing power and a lot of storage capacity. We were impressed by transtec's expertise and the reliability of the hardware." "We were also extremely satisfied with transtec's consultation. In principle, we knew precisely what we needed in advance; but there was still room for optimisation. transtec recommended a 10 GB connection from the storage node to the switch which speeds up the data package transfer rate tenfold compared to a standard connection of just one Gigabit. We weren't sure if this was economically feasible. Thanks to the excellent advice we received from transtec, there was no danger of bottlenecking data transfer at this point." The Swiss Internet service-provider Genotec AG was established in 2001. The company currently employs 22 people and supports more than 17,700 shared hosting customers and around 300 server customers in its own PC centres in Allschwil and Basle. According to Netcraft, Genotec is one of the top ten providers in Switzerland and is even among the top three providers in the Windows environment. What’s more, it also boasts the quality mark of Swiss Quality Hosting. A growing customer base is accompanied by a steady increase in requirements as regards customised servers and PCs. Genotec therefore requires new servers on a regular basis which are specially tailored to the requirements of individual customers. Major hardware manufacturers were unable to comply with these needs in practice. |
transtec supplied tailored consulting and more than 180 individually-configured servers and PCs based on a built-to-order principle to the value of more than 180,000 Euros. CALLEO range 101 and 301 servers as well as SENYO PCs were deployed enabling Genotec’s requirements for dedicated systems and shared hosting to be implemented in an optimum manner. |

The Dresden-Rossendorf Research Centre (FZD) has conducted application-oriented and basic research focussing on new materials, cancer research and nuclear safety research since 1992. Around 700 people are currently employed there. A high-performance IT system is imperative for the work performed at the Research Centre. Resource-intensive computations and simulations are run every day and experimental data is evaluated. For more than five years, the FZD has been using a high-performance cluster for these tasks. In 2006, the IT output was to be tripled by procuring an additional cluster. The new cluster is primarily used for performing sequential and parallel computations. The demands on processor output as well as memory, hard drive capacity and network performance are accordingly high. The FZD uses the Linux operating system. |

"What was convincing about the transtec offer was the price/performance ratio and – of equal significance – the manufacturer’s willingness to approach our individual demands in a very flexible manner. It goes without saying that a standard solution would not be of any use here. We need a tailor-made cluster solution. The hydra-cluster installed by transtec is utterly convincing. Our researchers make intensive use of the new possibilities: they can now run models and simulations in the area of nanostructures, for example, which were not possible in the past." | Since 2001, blueCarat AG with headquarters in Cologne, has been providing IT solutions and is involved in consulting as well as software development. The company focuses on Web-oriented technologies and the customers are from the telecommunications, industrial, commercial and public sectors. The aim of the IT upgrade was to cover various aspects: Besides updating the technical infrastructure, a split into autonomous administration units was also an issue. Another key target was virtualisation which would enable resources to be shared depending on requirements. |
The new complete solution has been in operation at blueCarat since May 2007, at the heart of which is a RAID system from transtec. The transtec PROVIGO 610 shares the storage capacities between the virtual machines which run on two CALLEO 301 transtec servers.
In addition, four CALLEO 101 models from the same family are also in use: firstly, they are used in the VPN in the demilitarised zone and secondly, as a firewall and VPN terminals at the subsidiaries. |
"Our decision to go with transtec was based on the previous good experience with the hardware. Other reasons included the attractive price-performance ratio and the fast response to our inquiries which can only be delivered by a small to mid-sized company like transtec. The fast logistics process from transtec was also
impressive."
"The extensive consultation service impressed us from the very start. The smooth implementation also spoke in favour of transtec. The conversion was worth every cent - we are now more flexible and can respond faster to our customers." Norbert Meyer, IT service management consultant at blueCarat |

| BELNET, the state network agency, was established in 1993. It supplies the Belgian government as well as all key national research facilities and universities with online services and Internet access. But the portfolio also includes technically more demanding services such as video conferences and VPN services (Virtual Private Network). BELNET enables research facilities to access international networks such as Internet2 and GÉANT. Apart from all of these services, BELNET has also been offering its customers capacity for FTP transfer (File Transfer Protocol) for quite some time although it has reached its limits at times in terms of bandwidth performance and hard drive capacity. |
BELNET aimed to increase customer satisfaction in the area of FTP in the form of an improved technical offering. The Belgian Internet service provider wished to better utilise the capacities of its bandwidth connections while simultaneously increasing the number of connections to the server clusters. By linking powerful servers to become clusters, the aim was to improve and utilise the technical resources in a more efficient manner. The idea to merge servers to clusters was a true innovation as there are only a few providers of FTP storage using this technology. transtec recommended BELNET an iSCSI storage system with switches based on a GB Ethernet connection. Users of BELNET services now benefit from a 10 GB Ethernet connection. transtec CALLEO 301 servers are used for front-end applications. The cluster solution ensures the requisite high availability. |
"After having consulted different players in the IT market during our tender, we opted for transtec as we are very satisfied with the prices and quality of their products. In our innovative FTP project, we have particularly benefited from the swift support provided by transtec whenever technical problems arose during tests and implementation." The J. Eberspächer GmbH & Co., founded in 1865 and with the main office in Esslingen am Neckar, is an independent company and focuses on two areas of technology: Exhaust gas technology (converters, soot filters, exhaust silencers) as well as auxiliary and supplementary heating systems for cars, vans, heavy goods vehicles, buses, construction vehicles and boats. The growing quantities of data arising from development applications and the heterogeneity of the IT environment caused IT managers an ever-increasing number of headaches. The administration of many IT single systems, including storage applications, was becoming increasingly unclear and more expensive. |
At the start of 2007, the SANmelody virtualisation software, from DataCore, was installed on the available hardware at the headquarters in Esslingen. It comprises of two transtec SAN Storage Domain Servers (SDS) with synchronous mirroring, authentic automatic failover/failback, thin provisioning and alternate pathing for the application servers. In February 2007, the Neunkirchen site received a separate SDS with new storage hardware in the form of redundant PROVIGO 610 FC/SATA RAID systems, including thin provisioning and asynchronous IP replication. Since then, Eberspächer has raised the utilisation capacities of both SAN installations by using other systems from the PROVIGO-610 series. Eberspächer is currently managing around 35 terabytes with the help of storage virtualisation, with an upward trend. |
"Naturally we spoke to other suppliers of virtualisation solutions before we made the final decision. The reason we chose transtec is, among others, because both the competence of their employees and the attractive cost effectiveness impressed us." "It wasn’t just the advice we received, it was also the unproblematic implementation that justified working together with transtec. Our IT administrators are more than satisfied with the new system and the users haven’t even noticed the change." "We will continue to push ahead with the virtualisation process in our office due to these positive experiences." Dr Thomas Rückle, TI (technical informatics) at Eberspächer |
