The Balzerborn hospitals form a highly modern rehabilitation centre for individual diagnostic procedures fitted with all the necessary equipment. Special examinations can be carried out at the nearby University Hospital in Göttingen, a partner of the hospital. For therapeutic treatment, the hospital has a wide range of rooms available for individual and group therapy. The immediate proximity of the hospital to the thermal salt-water baths and the graduation house extends the range of alternative treatments available considerably. A doctors‘ centre is also attached to the hospital divided into various subjects. This guarantees an optimum and comprehensive treatment for patients at the highest level. To implement the hospital‘s improvements, transtec designed a virtual server landscape under XEN with redundant CALLEO 322 high-performance servers with two multi-core CPUs and central ISCSI NAS3100L file server. transtec designed a backup concept to back up hospital data faster and more conveniently and to be available at any time in the event of any crashes. All of the above-mentioned components were integrated in a 19“ chassis with an uninterruptible power supply. The 200 hospital rooms were fitted with energy-saving TFTs as well as 30 workstations with energy-efficient transtec SENYO 610 Mini PCs for hospital personnel and doctors. "With transtec as IT specialist, we could have all the services from one source from consultation, installation to the service. transtec proved not only a competent partner but also a reliable one for all cases."

"Whoever wants to be ahead of the highly competitive health and rehabilitation sector has to have the latest technical upgrades to ensure patients the comfort they need and to optimise work processes in hospitals. A fast, effective and inexpensive implementation was possible thanks to reliable partners such as transtec."

Freie Universität Berlin

The Company The Solution Customer opinion
The seismic/seismology workgroup at the Freie Universität Berlin researches into the Earth's interior with the help of artificial and natural seismic waves. For this purpose, it developed a 3D imaging and modelling process which it applies in geotechnological and geodynamic projects on different depth scales.
Two examples from the field of geotechnology: with the help of this process, a prediction range of up to 100 metres is possible during the build of the new Gotthard Basis Tunnel. Reservoirs up to five kilometres underground can be imaged and characterised. This is important when extracting petroleum and natural gas or for underground CO2 storage.
By applying the process to geodynamic problems, the scientists want to improve research into the origin of large earthquakes. The Californian San-Andreas fault can thus be researched at a depth of ten kilometres and the Ocean plate under the South American Andes up to 100 kilometres.
For a long time, the institute had to rely on reserving the necessary computing time and storage capacity either on the University's large mainframe computers or on the Beowulf cluster built by the institute. In the Spring of 2008, transtec installed a cluster with 13 Dual-Quad-core computing nodes and five Terabyte storage capacity. The plan is to expand this to 36 nodes by the start of 2009. With a total of 288 GB RAM, all the workgroup's calculations and simulations should be executed.
In addition, 22 Linux workstations are in operation at the institute.
"Our institute needs a reliable system with excellent computing power and a lot of storage capacity. We were impressed by transtec's expertise and the reliability of the hardware."

"We were also extremely satisfied with transtec's consultation. In principle, we knew precisely what we needed in advance; but there was still room for optimisation. transtec recommended a 10 GB connection from the storage node to the switch which speeds up the data package transfer rate tenfold compared to a standard connection of just one Gigabit. We weren't sure if this was economically feasible. Thanks to the excellent advice we received from transtec, there was no danger of bottlenecking data transfer at this point."

Dr. Stefan Buske, head of the seismic data laboratory at the Institute for Geological Sciences at the Freie Universität Berlin

GIATA, die Gesellschaft zur Entwicklung und Vermarktung interaktiver Tourismusanwendungen mbH in Berlin, supports renowned tour operators such as TUI, Thomas Cook or Expedia in preparing their travel data for the Internet. The service-provider manages an extensive graphic data base of travel destinations visited by its customers, for example. The storage resources of this graphic archive had finally reached their limits. For this reason and following consulting by transtec, GIATA opted to implement a new and more modern server solution. The new network storage for graphic data for GIATA comprises several CALLEO 100 servers with PROVIGO 510 RAIDs. Both components are extremely reliable in operation as well as being very feasible thanks to their low maintenance demands. Accordingly, GIATA customers can access their data at all times as well as benefiting from the low risk of system failure. The Company The Solution Customer opinion
The Swiss Internet service-provider Genotec AG was established in 2001. The company currently employs 22 people and supports more than 17,700 shared hosting customers and around 300 server customers in its own PC centres in Allschwil and Basle. According to Netcraft, Genotec is one of the top ten providers in Switzerland and is even among the top three providers in the Windows environment. What’s more, it also boasts the quality mark of Swiss Quality Hosting.
A growing customer base is accompanied by a steady increase in requirements as regards customised servers and PCs. Genotec therefore requires new servers on a regular basis which are specially tailored to the requirements of individual customers. Major hardware manufacturers were unable to comply with these needs in practice.
transtec supplied tailored consulting and more than 180 individually-configured servers and PCs based on a built-to-order principle to the value of more than 180,000 Euros.
CALLEO range 101 and 301 servers as well as SENYO PCs were deployed enabling Genotec’s requirements for dedicated systems and shared hosting to be implemented in an optimum manner.
"I am convinced that a small or medium-sized company is best looked after by an equally medium-sized company."

"The control centre is of particular importance for us as our customers are also often technical experts whose feedback we continually incorporate in our developments. It is therefore imperative to have a hardware partner who is capable of reacting swiftly and with technical expertise to our requirements."

"The configurations made possible by transtec leave nothing to be desired. The good engineering is particularly tangible and the selection of components is always exactly right."

Simon Jenny, Managing Director and co-founder of Genotec

The Company The Solution Customer opinion
Since 2001, blueCarat AG with headquarters in Cologne, has been providing IT solutions and is involved in consulting as well as software development. The company focuses on Web-oriented technologies and the customers are from the telecommunications, industrial, commercial and public sectors. The aim of the IT upgrade was to cover various aspects: Besides updating the technical infrastructure, a split into autonomous administration units was also an issue. Another key target was virtualisation which would enable resources to be shared depending on requirements. The new complete solution has been in operation at blueCarat since May 2007, at the heart of which is a RAID system from transtec. The transtec PROVIGO 610 shares the storage capacities between the virtual machines which run on two CALLEO 301 transtec servers.

In addition, four CALLEO 101 models from the same family are also in use: firstly, they are used in the VPN in the demilitarised zone and secondly, as a firewall and VPN terminals at the subsidiaries.
"Our decision to go with transtec was based on the previous good experience with the hardware. Other reasons included the attractive price-performance ratio and the fast response to our inquiries which can only be delivered by a small to mid-sized company like transtec. The fast logistics process from transtec was also impressive."

"The extensive consultation service impressed us from the very start. The smooth implementation also spoke in favour of transtec. The conversion was worth every cent - we are now more flexible and can respond faster to our customers."

Norbert Meyer, IT service management consultant at blueCarat

The Company The Solution Customer opinion
BELNET, the state network agency, was established in 1993. It supplies the Belgian government as well as all key national research facilities and universities with online services and Internet access. But the portfolio also includes technically more demanding services such as video conferences and VPN services (Virtual Private Network). BELNET enables research facilities to access international networks such as Internet2 and GÉANT. Apart from all of these services, BELNET has also been offering its customers capacity for FTP transfer (File Transfer Protocol) for quite some time although it has reached its limits at times in terms of bandwidth performance and hard drive capacity. BELNET aimed to increase customer satisfaction in the area of FTP in the form of an improved technical offering. The Belgian Internet service provider wished to better utilise the capacities of its bandwidth connections while simultaneously increasing the number of connections to the server clusters. By linking powerful servers to become clusters, the aim was to improve and utilise the technical resources in a more efficient manner. The idea to merge servers to clusters was a true innovation as there are only a few providers of FTP storage using this technology.
transtec recommended BELNET an iSCSI storage system with switches based on a GB Ethernet connection. Users of BELNET services now benefit from a 10 GB Ethernet connection. transtec CALLEO 301 servers are used for front-end applications. The cluster solution ensures the requisite high availability.
"After having consulted different players in the IT market during our tender, we opted for transtec as we are very satisfied with the prices and quality of their products. In our innovative FTP project, we have particularly benefited from the swift support provided by transtec whenever technical problems arose during tests and implementation."

Pascal Panneels, who is responsible for the area of Servers & Services at BELNET
