Customer opinion

SUSE LINUX Products GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of Novell, Inc. (Nasdaq: NOVL). Novell offers a Linux platform which is designed for the seamless integration into diverse platform and application environments as well as a portfolio of integrated IT management software that helps companies around the world reduce cost, complexity and risk. With this infrastructure software and ecosystem of partnerships, Novell harmoniously integrates mixed IT environments, allowing people and technology to work as one. More information under www.novell.com. SUSE Linux Products GmbH, a subsidiary of Novell, provides its customers with a wide range of data and software solutions. This is why the company needs a storage system with a high capacity for the high-availability sector. At the same time, the systems must deliver a maximum fail safety, otherwise problems could arise at the customers.
The cooperation between SUSE Linux Products GmbH and transtec started in 1997. The hardware manufacturer from Tuebingen delivers, in collaboration with those responsible at SUSE Linux Products GmbH, a hardware concept which holds its own under the most demanding non-stop running conditions with low downtimes. A total of eight transtec PROVIGO 600 Fibre Channel storage arrays are installed to deliver a total capacity of around 33.5 Terabytes of which one is located at the company's site in Prague. Since Spring 2008, seven servers from the CALLEO 320 series are in operation at the site in Nuremberg along with 44 desktop PCs and four UPS systems for uninterruptible power supply.
"We have trusted in the technology delivered by transtec since 1997. The hardware is stable and reliable even under demanding continuous operation conditions and is an important foundation for research and development at SUSE Linux Products GmbH."
"As a leading IT company in the Linux sector, we know exactly what hardware we need. In order to guarantee the high availability of our IT landscape, we rely on high-quality and reliable hardware systems as well as first-class support. What's important is to find a manufacturer that adapts its system concepts to the customer's requirements. transtec provides us with both; quality and competent service"

transtec cluster supports the Freie Universität Berlin by making the tunneling of the new Gotthard Basis Tunnel safer
Systems, clustering and service

Situation

Solution

Customer opinion

The seismic/seismology workgroup at the Freie Universität Berlin researches into the Earth's interior with the help of artificial and natural seismic waves. For this purpose, it developed a 3D imaging and modelling process which it applies in geotechnological and geodynamic projects on different depth scales.
Two examples from the field of geotechnology: with the help of this process, a prediction range of up to 100 metres is possible during the build of the new Gotthard Basis Tunnel. Reservoirs up to five kilometres underground can be imaged and characterised. This is important when extracting petroleum and natural gas or for underground CO2 storage.
By applying the process to geodynamic problems, the scientists want to improve research into the origin of large earthquakes. The Californian San-Andreas fault can thus be researched at a depth of ten kilometres and the Ocean plate under the South American Andes up to 100 kilometres.
For a long time, the institute had to rely on reserving the necessary computing time and storage capacity either on the University's large mainframe computers or on the Beowulf cluster built by the institute. In the Spring of 2008, transtec installed a cluster with 13 Dual-Quad-core computing nodes and five Terabyte storage capacity. The plan is to expand this to 36 nodes by the start of 2009. With a total of 288 GB RAM, all the workgroup's calculations and simulations should be executed.
In addition, 22 Linux workstations are in operation at the institute.
"Our institute needs a reliable system with excellent computing power and a lot of storage capacity. We were impressed by transtec's expertise and the reliability of the hardware."

"We were also extremely satisfied with transtec's consultation. In principle, we knew precisely what we needed in advance; but there was still room for optimisation. transtec recommended a 10 GB connection from the storage node to the switch which speeds up the data package transfer rate tenfold compared to a standard connection of just one Gigabit. We weren't sure if this was economically feasible. Thanks to the excellent advice we received from transtec, there was no danger of bottlenecking data transfer at this point.

Dr. Stefan Buske, head of the seismic data laboratory at the Institute for Geological Sciences at the Freie Universität Berlin

Tradebit AG
Storage and consulting

Situation

Solution

Customer opinion

Tradebit AG provides a cutting-edge platform for online sales of entertainment-related products suitable for a mass market. After the creation of its bitclix.de eSales site, Tradebit sought a hardware infrastructure that could cope with the resulting high storage volume.

In addition to adequate computing power, reliability and security, a high degree of expandability and scalability were required.
Tradebit decided on the purchase of several transtec PROVIGO 410E iSCSI RAID systems, each with 3.75 TByte capacity and running under the Red Hat Global File System. “Scalability and the good price/performance ratio were the decisive factors in selecting transtec as a partner. A comparable commercially-available RAID-5 storage system at the same price would be inconceivable and a single-node system would fail to deliver the GbE performance in the LAN.”

Ralf Schwöbel, Tradebit’s CEO and Linux expert

Service and storage

Situation

Solution

Customer opinion

nexellent AG in Glattbrugg, Switzerland, provides managed data centre services for outsourcing IT infrastructures. An increasing number of customers desired additional solutions in the area of storage and backup in order to comply with the new statutory regulations. The company was therefore increasingly faced with the challenge of expanding its IT services and therefore its business area. The new storage service was of particular interest for nexellent as it could be easily integrated into its existing portfolio. transtec supported the Swiss IT service-provider in its capacity as consultant and supplied the right hardware. The Swiss service-provider for IT outsourcing collaborated with the experts at transtec AG in Rümlang and Tübingen to develop a system solution for storage and backup services. The hardware component forms a high-available storage system developed by transtec. The core of the nexellent SAN is formed by a transtec PROVIGO 550 SAS Business RAID. Low maintenance requirements, easy operation and a capacity of up to 60 hard drives and 45 TB are what distinguish this storage system. What’s more, it only requires half of the electricity consumed by other standard systems while integrated snapshot functions ensure maximum security. “transtec is the ideal partner for realising our new services in the area of storage and backup. First of all, we were entirely convinced by the great consulting competence displayed by transtec. The fact that we were able to procure the requisite hardware for an attractive price also made the decision an easy one from an economic perspective. The new storage services mean that we now enjoy an ideal position as an IT service-provider. We are able to offer our customers comprehensive solutions for their Data Management as storage and backup supplement the data services offered to date in an optimum manner.”

Enrico Goldhahn, Product and Marketing Manager at nexellent.

GIATA, die Gesellschaft zur Entwicklung und Vermarktung interaktiver Tourismusanwendungen mbH in Berlin, supports renowned tour operators such as TUI, Thomas Cook or Expedia in preparing their travel data for the Internet. The service-provider manages an extensive graphic data base of travel destinations visited by its customers, for example. The storage resources of this graphic archive had finally reached their limits. For this reason and following consulting by transtec, GIATA opted to implement a new and more modern server solution. The new network storage for graphic data for GIATA comprises several CALLEO 100 servers with PROVIGO 510 RAIDs. Both components are extremely reliable in operation as well as being very feasible thanks to their low maintenance demands. Accordingly, GIATA customers can access their data at all times as well as benefiting from the low risk of system failure. “At transtec, we were particularly convinced of the quality as well as competent advice and uncomplicated service provided. We outlined our demands to the responsible Sales Manager who then developed a tailor-made offer following extensive consulting. Thanks to modern server technology, our services are now distinguished by improved availability and our customers benefit from the higher data transfer rates.”
