transtec makes a commitment to the Seagate Barracuda 180

RAID systems with up to 20 terabytes - it now is available

Banbury/Tübingen, 28th May 2001.
With its new RAID system "transtec 5400" the system and direct provider transtec AG, with headquarters in Tübingen, Germany, now offers, effective immediately, a single RAID system with a total capacity of up 20 terabytes in a 19" cabinet. This enormous increase in storage capacity is the result of the certification by transtec of what is at present the largest capacity hard drive in the world - the 180 gigabyte Seagate Barracuda 180. For customers this means a drastic reduction in the cost of high capacity RAID systems. When such a Fibre Channel RAID system is imbedded in a SAN it is possible for multiple servers to makes use of this storage capacity.

The Barracuda 180 is also found in the transtec 5100 (Ultra Wide SCSI) and transtec 5300 (Fibre Channel) systems. Here the capacity is 1.8 terabyte in a 4-U rack system. In addition, the Barracuda 180 has also been certified for use in single and double hard drive systems in Intel based servers as well as Unix workstations.
The Seagate Barracuda 180 features 7200 RPM and a mean read-mode seek-time of 7.4 ms. With the certification of the Seagate Barracuda 180 transtec takes its place in the high storage solution vanguard. The certification also demonstrates transtec's ongoing commitment to providing solutions which meet the need for ever increasing storage capacity.
RAID systems featuring the Seagate Barracuda 180 are deliverable immediately. Prices for the transtec 5400 begin at 92,000 Euro (VAT included for the 3.6TB model).
