New transtec LTO-5 drives for fast, reliable data backup
Affordable and stable offline backup for critical company dataBanbury, Oxfordshire, 15 April, 2010. LTO Ultrium 5 standard tape drives and media are now available from transtec. Configured with 1.5 Terabytes, the new tape drives deliver almost twice as much storage capacity as LTO-4 tapes. Up to 3.0 Terabytes can be stored in compression mode. A maximum of 280 Megabytes of data can be transferred per second. An integrated 256-bit encryption mechanism guarantees safe transfer. transtec LTO-5 drives are available either for internal installation, as external subsystems or as 19 inch rack slots. The transtec LTO-5 drives can also be configured with LTO-4 and LTO-3 standard tapes.
Years of data backup experience
For 30 years, transtec has provided companies and institutions with consultation and support services in developing and implementing their data backup strategies. transtec tape drives and tapes in compliance with the LTO Ultrium standard have demonstrated their efficiency for the long-term backup of critical company data. Sebastian Bach, Product manager at transtec, comments: “Particularly when backup data has to be stored separately from the IT network for legal regulations or in a multi-level backup and disaster recovery strategy, the new LTO Ultrium 5 systems are the one to choose. They are failsafe, reliable and offer an extremely attractive price-performance ratio”.
Twice as fast
With the new transtec LTO-5 tape backup system, users profit from a considerably faster data transfer rate and double the storage capacity. Up to three Terabytes of data can be saved on each storage media within around three hours. transtec LTO-5 storage systems dynamically adjust the data transfer speed (47 to 140 Megabytes per second) to the host speed. This Data Rate Matching (DRM) optimises performance and at the same time reduces the wear on the LTO drive and media.
Added security and fast storage connection
In addition to the data encryption feature, other security standards are also integrated into the transtec LTO-5 tape drive: Any host computers wanting access first have to authenticate themselves and different hosts can be assigned with various access authorisation levels. Encryption technology can also be applied to protect code entry. The transtec LTO-5 tape drives are also configured with the fast SAS/600 connection.
Enhanced flexibility with partitioning
The transtec LTO-5 drives meet with the future Linear Tape File System (LTFS) standard which allows tapes to be divided into different partitions. The release of the relevant firmware updates is scheduled for summer 2010. This new standard presents users with interesting new application options. Tapes can be used like external removable media. Data is also easier to find and play back on partitions.
transtec LTO-5 tape drives are compatible with all LTO-5 tape media on the market. The drives are available from 1,460 GBP, a single medium from 63 GBP.
